Our
Mission
To educate patients and their families about how to protect
their bodily privacy during medical procedures, how to advocate
for their right to request same-sex medical professionals for
intimate procedures, and how to recognize and help prevent sexual
abuse and misconduct by medical professionals. We also educate
medical professionals about the importance of respecting patient
modesty, privacy, dignity, and personal boundaries.
What inspired Misty Roberts to start Medical Patient Modesty?
It began with a deeply personal
experience that shaped her understanding of dignity, privacy,
and the importance of speaking up when something isn’t
right.

a ministry dedicated to helping others advocate for themselves.

Our
Goals
*Educate hospitals throughout the United States
about the importance of patient modesty and encourage them to
provide meaningful patient-modesty training for doctors, nurses,
technicians, and other healthcare staff.
*Increase, through hospital education, the number of male nurses
available for intimate procedures (such as vasectomy and urinary
catheterization) on male patients because many men are uncomfortable
with female nurses doing these procedures on them.
*Contact urology and OB/GYN offices to educate them about the
importance of giving patients the option to have same-sex medical
professionals participate in intimate procedures or surgeries
that require exposure of private areas. Some female OB/GYNs
may not fully realize how important this is to many female patients
and their husbands, particularly when they strongly desire an
exclusively female care team. For example, one woman and her
husband specifically requested an all-female OB/GYN operating-room
team for her hysterectomy. Despite their request, a male surgical
technician ultimately participated in the surgery. Patients
should not have their clearly expressed modesty preferences
disregarded
*Decrease the number of unnecessary
invasive procedures such as urinary
catheterizations by educating the medical community and
the public.
*Increase the awareness of alternative procedures to protect
a person’s modesty such as the use of abdominal vs. transvaginal
ultrasound to detect ovarian cysts through patient and hospital
education.
*Decrease opportunities for sexual impropriety
and abuse of patients by medical staff.
*Educate parents about how to protect their children especially
teenagers
from unnecessary intimate exams
Our
Vision
We envision a healthcare system in which patients do not feel
pressured to ignore their deeply held concerns about bodily privacy
and modesty simply because they are seeking medical care.
We want patients to feel empowered to speak up,
ask questions, request reasonable accommodations, and advocate
for themselves when they believe their modesty or privacy has
been disregarded. When patients experience a violation of their
modesty, we encourage them to document what happened and communicate
their concerns directly to the healthcare professional and/or
hospital. Patient complaints can bring attention to problems
that might otherwise remain unaddressed and can encourage healthcare
providers to become more sensitive to patient modesty.
The more patients are willing to speak up, the greater
the opportunity to change the way patient modesty is understood
and respected in medical settings.
Medical Patient Modesty does not address issues surrounding
abortion or euthanasia because MPM does not support these procedures.
